I’ve known Brian for years now, and I’ve still not met another designer with a deeper knowledge of design, art, architecture, literature, music, film, cartoons—of culture itself. His curiosity is endless. You can talk to him about modern painting, a Japanese architect, an obscure typeface, or the history of a forgotten brand, and somehow it all connects (wait til you see his library…).

But that’s not why I dig him the most.

Brian is excitable. After all these years, after building one of the world’s greatest creative studios (that does branding on an artistic level) and helping shape some of the most recognized brands on the planet, he still approaches the world like an joyful kid who just discovered something wonderful in a pond.

Brian’s done something remarkable—he’s managed to grow up without growing cynical. He’ll still ask the question no one else thought of. He sees the tiny detail everyone else walks past. He laughs easily and loves his orange hat. And he reminds me that the best experts never lose their play.

When Brian first invited me to use COLLINS TreeHaus for our first creative gathering, I felt like a kid who’d been handed the keys to the greatest clubhouse imaginable.

That’s what being around him feels like—you want to read more, make more, risk more, notice more. You remember why you became creative in the first place.

Brian has accomplished enough in his life to become selective with his attention and fearless with his humor, but he’s somehow protected the part of himself that still plays, still wonders, and still believes that creativity can change lives. That’s a rare thing, and it’s exactly what you’ll feel if you spend a few days with him.

This October, the two of us are opening the doors again for twelve people. Twelve. We do not have all the answers. But we have very good questions. And we know the future belongs to creative people who never stop wondering.

The most important voice your child will ever hear is their own. Not yours or their teacher’s. Not their friend’s or YouTube’s voice or TikTok’s or AI.

Their own.

It’s their weird little voice that says, “What would happen if...” or “I think there’s another way.” It’s the voice of intuition and curiosity, of imagination and courage.

As parents, sometimes this is the voice we mistakenly teach our children to not listen to. It’s also the voice we spend much of our adult lives ignoring.

Today’s children have access to more information than any generation in history. They can ask a screen almost any question and get multiple answers in seconds. Facts and news and slop are everywhere. Opinions are endless and the advice never stops.

But information isn’t wisdom.

Knowing a million facts doesn’t teach a child how to trust themselves. It doesn’t help them know when something is beautiful, or kind, or true. It doesn’t teach them how to stand up for someone who is different. It doesn’t help them make art, fall in love, fail beautifully, or decide what kind of person they want to become.

Wisdom is different.

Wisdom comes from paying attention. It comes from being bored. It comes from asking questions a search engine can’t answer and trying something because it feels right. Wisdom comes from listening to that strange little tug inside that says, “This way…”. Children are born with that and don’t need us to install it. They need us to protect it.

Instead of giving children all the answers, what if we celebrated their curiosity and praised original thinking instead of “right” answers?

What if we reminded children that being wonderfully weird isn’t something to outgrow—but it’s their source and greatest gift. The world doesn’t need more people who know all the answers, it needs individuals who can listen to themselves and their imagination. Our job isn’t to raise children who can repeat what they’ve heard, it’s to raise humans who trust their voice enough to create something new with it.

Maybe our greatest job isn’t teaching children what to think, but helping them remember that the wisdom they need is already inside them.

My kids are weird.

And I love that about them.

They’re weird because, like all kids, they were born that way.

They have crazy wrong explanations as to how electric cars work and tell strange stories that go on forever. They wear their axolotl onesie PJ’s to the grocery store and see nothing wrong or ironic about it. And none of these are flaws for me to correct, but evidence of their burgeoning spirit and originality.

Our job as parents isn’t to smooth out our children’s edges or teach them how to fit in. Our job is to protect those edges and constantly remind them that different isn’t dangerous and that what makes them odd today may be the very thing that makes them extraordinary tomorrow.

The world will do its job of making our children more compliant, agreeable, reasonable and “normal.” Home should be the place where they hear a different message:

Teaching my daughter how to ride a bicycle was never about the bike, it was about teaching her how to master her own fear.

Especially when her first attempt landed her in the bushes.

Bravery is a verb not a personality trait.

It’s not something you’re born with—it’s something you practice.

It’s a the act of choosing LOVE over fear.

It doesn’t mean you’re never scared. It means you choose to move forward anyway.

The secret of the Universe: No one knows jack shit.

Every artist, scientist, engineer is just making it up by inventing, experimenting and conjuring. For a child to know this creates FREEDOM!

Knowing that they can figure anything out gives a child permission to look under the hood and ask, “What would happen if...”

This is the anti-dote to “I can’t” and it widens their worldview.

A good poster can hold those lessons as well. It doesn’t speak to you once. It’s a daily reminder, like a sign pointing the way and giving direction.

This is why posters matter.

I vividly remember the posters on my wall as a kid, like the anti war poster that used humor and irony to make a powerful statement. The classic “Hang in there kitty” hung in my sister’s room using “cute” as a mnemonic device to teach grit. The most curious was Toulouse Lautrec’s “Moulin Rouge” print that hung in our basement, it had a level of artistry and… well, weirdness that I fell in love with.

All these were to shape who I was to become.

As a designer, I’ve tried to carry those themes in my work. I want my work to have humor and irony. I want it to be memorable, powerful, artistic and even weird.

I used this spirit a few years ago to create a series of meaningful work for the New York City Department of Probation. Using posters as teachers and I was able to see in real time the effect they had on both the probationers and staff. I was able to witness the clients read my posters and then turn to their probation officer and say, “That’s what I think!” Proof of the idea that in the particular lies the universal—the more honest I can be in my work, the more meaning it will have for others.

Today, posters matter possibly more than ever. Humor, poetry and artistry have more meaning against the backdrop of reduced attention spans, AI slop dullness and flaccid Etsy platitudes.

I’ve never believed in posters as decoration. My work has always been about trying to find meaning and share what I love. My new “Wonder Full” series of prints seeks this same purpose, but for kids—to inspire curiosity and teach authenticity, courage and wisdom.

I created these for my own children. I want them to internalize this handful of ideas, and through the additive power of seeing them everyday, the ideas will becomes theirs, a part of them. Hopefully, these prints will become a part of your children’s lives as well.

She seemed to be the authority in the house.

But her rather consistent answer was, “Go ask your father.”

My father would then volley, “Go ask your mother.”

So, I was left wondering, “Well… who does know?”

I was thinking about this conundrum recently, and how my life would have changed if their answer was different. What if they they told me to go ask myself? What if they asked, “What do YOU think?”

What a world changing idea for a kid to know that they were born with answers—and that they should trust them. What a gift to be invited, at 5 or 8 years old, to trust your thoughts and instincts.

My own children are growing up in the world of screens, infiltrated by AI reliance and the pressure to outsource their opinion, thoughts—even play—to a computer. I want to use my work to counter that in any way possible. I want to guide children to seek the answers in their heart, to choose love over fear and know that everythingisfigureoutable.

This reminiscing, is what inspired my new print series “Wonder Full.”

Inside us all is the same deep and ancient command to, “Create, create, create!”

This is the primal drive of all life on the planet. The grass and trees know this. It’s what keeps the birds and squirrels chirping and scurrying and from the our moment of our own conception until we choose to die it’s what drives us. This constant birthing is not a one-time event, but a daily practice.

Create, create, create is an idea we need to be reminded of, especially today with the push to trust things outside of ourselves, outsource our instincts and allow our creative work to pass through a computer’s anus.

We’ve become programmed to think of creativity as a special gift given to a few artists, designers, musicians or writers. But creativity is much more natural and deeper than that. Creation isn’t something we do, it’s the command of life and who we are. In this act, we align ourselves with the fundamental impulse of life itself.

Just as a river stagnates when it stops flowing, if we aren’t constantly evolving, learning, and growing we are dying. I watched it in my parents, I see it in my friends. We get “stuck in our ways” and our lives get smaller.

Creativity is life expressing itself through our being and should show in our relationships, our teaching and our play as one continuous loop and constant evidence of aliveness.

“Create, create, create!” is adoration for life itself.
