Welcome.
Let's do this.
The gentle king of my childhood, Mr. Rogers, said: “Look for the helpers.”
That has stuck with me my whole life. I always wanted to be a helper.
That’s why I’m here on Substack. I want this space to be a source of common sense, encouragement and of permission. A place that says: yes, you can go against the grain. Yes, please fight the good fight. And just as importantly: yes, you can change direction and walk away. Those are great skills. That’s how you make work that matters. And I want to help.
I’ve been lucky. I have had—and am still having—a very nice career as an artist, designer, and author. I get to do work I love. But I also know, intimately, how hard it is today to be paid to do what you love. How confusing and even lonely it can be. How fragile it feels when the rules keep changing, formats keep changing and life keeps changing.
The last few years of my life have been the most difficult I’ve ever known; divorce, COVID, struggle, pain and loss. I won’t pretend otherwise. But difficulty—with the right perspective—can make you stronger, bolder, more resolute, more yourself.
I know my story isn’t unique, because it’s all of our stories. We all have our battles and we all carry that weight.
But the struggle can be hard without being sad. I love what I do, I love making things. And colors and shapes and words make me immensely happy. I love to play.
I want that for you, too.
So, welcome.
And look for the helpers.
